Combined Digital Relative Humidity and Temperature Sensor
Mitsumi leverages its expertise in IC solutions to offer a robust relative humidity and temperature sensor (RH&T) integrated with our own custom 24 bit Sigma Delta analog front end (AFE) to provide a fully calibrated and temperature compensated digitized I2C output device. The sensor includes a heater function for diagnostic and a data ready pin for efficient digital communication.
Our relative humidity and temperature sensor’s patented proprietary polymer and parallel plate capacitive structure provides excellent robustness and reliability without sacrificing response time. With a parallel plate capacitive structure, the layer of moisture absorbing polymer does not need to extend far beyond the upper conductor to provide protection against contaminants. Since the electric field is concentrated between the lower and upper conductors, contaminates found above the upper conductor have little impact on the capacitive value of the sensor therefore limiting errors from contaminants. A thin coat of polymer over the upper conductor provides less distance for moisture to travel between the two parallel conductors thereby increasing response time. Additionally, the upper conductor is etched with a series of 3 micron holes (3 micron spacing) to facilitate fast and uniform moisture absorption into the polymer.
Contamination Testing at 50%RH and 25°C
In comparison to other parallel plate capacitive humidity sensors with the upper electrode holes further apart or when the polymer is more porous, Mitsumi’s sensor is significantly more responsive. The larger hole spacing prevents the polymer from uneven absorption and expulsion of moisture thus increasing the response time. By the same token, more porous polymer (with more air pockets) suffers from the same absorption and expulsion issue.
The result is the same for capacitive humidity sensors with an interdigitated structure where both conductors are on the same plane, and the electric field forms a loop into the polymer. This capacitive arrangement is more susceptible to influence from contaminants since they are in the path of the electric field lines. To reduced this effect, sensors with an interdigitated structure utilize a thicker polymer layer over the conductors but suffer slower response time due to higher polymer volume for a given surface area.

The Desktop Demo Board is integrated with a MW3827 RH&T sensor, two LCD displays, battery, and display logic IC. No additional SW needed.
MW3827 Demo Kit
The MW3827 Demo Kit includes: one I2C/USB adapter Board with the relative humidity temperature sensor pre-installed, and a USB Type A to USB Type-C cable. This kit is ideal for simple functional evaluation similar to a thermostat application and cannot survive harsh environment due to limitations from the supporting I2C/USB adapter.
MMS201 Demo Kit
The MMS201 Demo Kit includes a MMS201 sensor module, I2C/USB adapter Board, USB Type A to USB Type-C cable, and a module 4-wire cables approximately one meter long. This kit allows the MMS201 module to be remotely installed in areas not suitable for commercial grade electronics. This setup is ideal for testing harsh applications such as clothes washer dryer, refrigerators, and dish washer.
MMS201 Data Logger Kit
The MMS201 Data Logger Kit contains one MMS201 sensor module, data logger & cable. This setup is ideal for remote testing applications where PC or Laptops are not available to log data. The logger is water resistant and can store up to 1 MB of data before being over written. An External USB port allows downloading of logged data into a PC or laptop.
Sensor Shield Kit for Arduino
The Mitsumi Sensor Shield Kit for Arduino includes a level shifter board, selected sensor modules and cables. Up to nine I2C or two SPI sensor modules can be connected to the level shifter at a time. Please see below for available sensor modules.
The level shifter board allows usage of the following Arduino models (not included): UNO, LEONARDO, DUE AND MEGA2560. Sample codes are available in the Software and Sample Codes section. MW3827 address change requires a conversion board and MMS201 Demo Kit.
