MinebeaMitsumi Partners With Fukuroi City to Co-Create a Future City

MinebebeaMitsumi Inc. has entered into a partnership agreement with Fukuroi City, Shizuoka Prefecture on July 18, 2025, for co-creating a smart city that meets the evolving needs of the time by utilizing MinebeaMitsumi’s digital technologies, including smart lighting.

In Fukuroi City, only about 20% of the street and park lighting had been converted to LED. As a result, addressing issues such as reducing maintenance costs and lowering environmental impact had become essential. To this end, Fukuroi City launched a project, “Convertion to LEDs, Fukuroi City 2024 (or ESCO Project)” to convert their lightings into LEDs all at once. The benefit of the project extended beyond LED conversion, as MinebeaMitsumi’s smart lighting system allows for centralized management of lighting intensity levels and other settings. This project is expected to bring out positive impacts, such as reducing CO2 emission by 80% and maintenance costs.

The aim of this partnership agreement is to conduct a field trial using Fukuroi City as a testing ground. By utilizing the smart lighting system installed throughout the city for the ESCO project, the initiative aims to address infrastructure challenges such as road flooding and traffic management. This trial will be conducted based on surveillance camera and communication technologies currently under development by MinebeaMitsumi. This is the first initiative of its kind in Shizuoka Prefecture. Moving forward, MinebeaMitsumi intends to expand the range of the field trial in order to solve wider aspects of issues that Fukuroi City faces.

Items to be Demonstrated in the Field Trial

Leveraging MinebeaMitsumi’s smart lighting system incorporated into a LED lighting to connect the lights to Central Management System (CMS) via sensors and devices, the following field trial will be conducted:

1. Disaster Prevention/Mitigation
  • For taking preventative measures for road flooding using surveillance camera and flooding sensors
2. City Planning
  • For monitoring the flow of people and vehicles, planning for promoting bicycle use, land usage, measure for safe school routes, etc.
