CPAP

A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine pressurizes the airway to reduce obstruction in a patient’s air passage. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) diagnoses have been rising around the world due to an ageing population, increased obesity levels, and worsening environmental conditions. OSA is a sleep disorder caused by a blocked airway and can lead to daytime drowsiness and poor quality of life. Left untreated, OSA may incite additional health problems such as stroke and heart failure.

A continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) device prescribed by a doctor can alleviate OSA conditions. A CPAP device prevents airway obstructions during sleep by forcing air into the lungs to keep the air passage open. This device helps maintain positive air pressure in order to prevent a patient’s tongue or soft palate from blocking air flow into the back of the throat. High-end CPAP devices utilize pressure sensors to control the prescribed pressure settings that are generated by the blower. Snoring detection is an additional advantage of integrating a pressure sensor.

How we add value

A high-pressure setting will open the airway but may cause discomfort as it impedes exhalation. Since many people snore before experiencing apnea, a pressure sensor that is able to detect snoring can be used to precisely identify the snoring trigger point and define the pressure settings, thereby reducing discomfort during exhalation.

Currently, most gauge pressure sensors used in CPAP equipment are digital, and thus have a predefined update rate that is often not fast enough to capture snoring events. Mitsumi’s MMR920 offers selectable SPI or I2C digital outputs, has an update rate of 0.4ms, and has been proven to capture snoring events. Additionally, the sensor includes a data ready signal for the I2C bus to optimize microcontroller communication. Our MMR920 is an ideal pressure sensor for CPAP applications.
