To reduce global warming, many manufacturers are making their products smarter and more energy efficient. Sensing technologies can be integrated into a standard product to boost intelligence so that energy consumption can be reduced. For example, AC manufacturers have identified a mechanism for sensing a hot location by scanning the room with an infrared temperature sensor mounted on a stepper motor. Instead of using multiple arrays of Infrared sensors, which can be cost prohibitive, a simple IR sensor array and stepping motor can be used to provide a thermal map. This thermal map is used to precisely direct cool air into “hot spots” by adjusting ventilation flaps.
