All-terrain Vehicles Shift to All-electric Powertrains

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as “a vehicle that travels on low-pressure tires, with a seat that is straddled by the operator, along with handlebars for steering control”. These vehicles can be used for many applications such as land management, military and defense, agriculture, and recreation. While they don’t significantly contribute to carbon emissions like passenger cars and trucks, there has been a shift in demand from gas-powered to electric engines. Other benefits of switching to electric ATVs and electric snowmobiles include quiet and smooth operation that contribute towards a better experience for the rider.

More Fun in the Snow with Electric Snowmobiles

Snowmobiles are a type of all-terrain vehicle designed specifically for… you guessed it, snow! If you have ever ridden a snowmobile, you will know that it omits some potent exhaust fumes. This, coupled with the fact that most recreational snowmobiling is done in groups, can make it an unpleasant experience for other riders that happen to be towards the back. It is also difficult to hear one another over the noise of the engine.

Manufacturers are taking the hint and are working to improve the rider’s connection to nature by producing electric snowmobiles. Just like electric passenger cars, electric ATVs require specialized components.

Resolver Motors Promote Optimal Torque and Efficiency

Resolvers are used to precisely measure rotational speed and position of electric motors. It is important to integrate resolver motors into EVs to provide feedback that is necessary for closed-loop motor control. When the rider depresses the pedal (or handle accelerator), the resolver senses the position and speed of the electric motor. Then, the system calculates the input voltage required to drive the electric motor at the proper torque and speed. The most efficient systems perform this measurement, calculation and output cycle almost instantaneously for the best riding experience.

MinebeaMitsumi developed high-precision resolvers from a deep understanding of electromagnetic technology acquired over a long history designing synchro generators. Resolvers are best suited for applications that require high reliability as they have a high resistance to heat, dust and oil. They are also more robust than alternative sensors, such as encoders, as they can easily withstand shock and vibration.
