Air conditioning units are notorious for being power hungry and inefficient. Mechanical upgrades such as high efficiency motors and fans can only reduce power consumption by so much. Adding intelligence to the system with sensors can drive further every savings. An infrared temperature sensor array can be used to scan the room to determine two things: if there are occupants in the room and where those occupants are within the room. With that data, the AC unit can target air flow directly at the occupants or turn off the unit if the room is empty.
